Why Rooted never shows the full article

Rooted shows headlines, short summaries and pictures. It never shows the full article. Every piece you read, you read on the newsroom's own site.

Why

Independent newsrooms live on their readers. Visits, subscriptions and donations keep them going. A reader that copies their work into its own pages takes all of that away. Rooted is built to send people to them instead.

What that means in practice

  • Every headline links straight to the outlet. We never rewrite the link, so the newsroom's own analytics see the visit coming from rooted.news.
  • Summaries are the short ones each outlet puts in its own feed.
  • Pictures show as small thumbnails unless the outlet has agreed to full size.
  • Outlet pages carry the newsroom's subscribe or support link, where it has one.

Our crawler reads public feeds and follows each site's robots.txt and content signals. Outlets can ask to be added or removed at any time.

Want to give back to the newsrooms you read most? Turn on Support what you read under You, Notifications. Once a month it sends you your three most read outlets, with their support links.
